#DMWF Expo Europe returned to Amsterdam last week for two days of insight and networking in the beautiful Beurs van Berlage. We were joined by over 500 attendees and more than 60 speakers across the two days and explored a variety of topics including the future of digital marketing; virtual reality, artificial intelligence, branding, SEO and more!

Day 1 Highlights

Our esteemed host Glen Gilmore kicked off proceedings and our first keynote of the day by Paul Poels, Director of Digital Analytics at Philips who shared this thoughts on creating an integrated approach to digital transformation and prompted some great discussion about the importance of using live A/B testing in data driven marketing.

We also heard from Steven Bartlett, CEO of Social Chain who shared his tips on working with micro-influencers and brand ambassadors and how their role in your campaigns can drive success. In a world where we are at constant disposal to advertisers; how do you make your campaigns break through to your intended audience? Why choose social media?

Steven also shared the importance of choosing the right influencers, looking further than audience size but focusing on engagement levels and relevance to increase ROI.

Our friends at Scrollytelling have picked five stand-out quotes from Steven’s presentation at DMWF Expo Europe. Check them out here.

In one of our most hotly anticipated presentations of the day; Nicky Claeys, CMO Netherlands & Belgium of Domino’s Pizza took the stage to help us understand the challenges of marketing to Generation Z – meeting them where they are and how to make your brand relatable.

Who are Gen Z?

Marketing to Generation Z – Goodbye Twitter, Welcome Instagram and Snapchat:

As the day continued we heard lots of discussion regarding the importance of storytelling from @BrianFit who discussed how the challenge to change the world isn’t technology; it’s storytelling.

David Morris, Director of Solutions Consulting EMEA at Tealium then took the stage and discussed the necessity of understanding your audience in a multi-platform marketing world:

Throughout the afternoon we heard about the role of brand building in the digital environment from Beth James at DeliveryHero, and we heard from Ellen den Braber, Schneider Electric and Lauren Proctor, Jobbatical on how their organisations are leading digital disruption. Closing the first day we had our panel on data driven marketing strategies which raised some interesting questions on how to use analytics that are relevant to you.

Day 2 Highlights

Our Day 2 agenda explored the rise of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, short-lived storytelling, SEO and the future of social media. In one of the most eagerly anticipated sessions of the day, we were joined by Marthe and Silvia from PepsiCo who shared their case study on the Doritos VR Battle – exploring what VR means for advertisers and the importance of aligning your brand with the right influencers – a key theme at this year’s event.

You can check out the video from the campaign below:

As the topic of VR continued throughout the day; Kate Lechowicz from NetApp shared:

Storytelling was a huge area of focus during the event with Jannis Rudski-Weise sharing a 5 Step Storytelling model and our storytelling panel asking; are we looking for engagement or conversion?

We finished Day 2 discussing the future of social media; with Kelvin Lee predicting that we will see the rise of the long-tail social network.
